I tried breastfeeding. Valiantly in fact. And I'll never forget crying in my pediatrician's office and feeling like a total failure. She told me there is nothing wrong with formula feeding and when I brought up the expense she told me there is nothing wrong with skipping out on the expensive brands. I thought she was trying to make me feel better but I've learned since then that when it comes to the important stuff, nutrition, etc, formula is formula and you can give your baby the same nutrition for $600 a year less. Go on Youtube and check out the video up there about store brand formulas. Think it is highlighting the target brand, or wal mart. Anyway, they talk to parents and its pretty clear to me. I am so glad to see this being talked about. I have to say I agree with what everyone is saying so far. I am a nurse and have never liked the fact taht these companies get away with giving away their formula to mom and dads leaving the hospital. I really believe it is important for moms to at least try and breastfeed their babies. However, you are right, it is not an option for some people and I don't like the way those people get judged. Formula is a necessity for many families out there and good for these companies for recognizing that you just don't have to pay an extra $600 a year for the same ingredients.

I don't have children but from what I have read breast milk is by far the best, however I think it is wrong WIC programs to try and dictate that choice to mothers. It is theirs and like you so wisely pointed out there are some women who can't breast feed for one reason or another. They shouldn't be penalized for that when formula is going to be one of their biggest expense.

As a midwife and mom who breastfed her 4 kids a minimum of 2 1/2 years each I couldn't agree more with breast is best.
What I am seeing at the hospital is moms who say they are bottlefeeding so they can get all the formula, but who really do want to breastfeed. Unfortunately when they say they are bottlefeeding they do not get the services of our lactation consultants so their success rate at breastfeeding, I am afraid, is going to go down.
Its a terrible catch 22.
