I'm sure it would soften the crud on the stove too. When I got my wedding dress altered, the netting from underneath it needed to be shortened. The seamstress' mother crafted it into a dish scrubber and gave it to me as a wedding gift. If you have a dryer sheet or even better liquid fabric softener, just put some water in your dish (or fill the sink and submerge if the splats are on the outside) and put a half capful or half a sheet in and let set for about 15m.  All of the stuff on the dish will WIPE OFF.  I'm not kiddin'.
