There is Always Something

Paying off debt is not easy. It takes dedication, thought, and hard work. But I think that the hardest part about trying to pay off debt is the lack of consistent momentum. You set up a plan and put it to work. Debt is chipped away, and WHAM something pops up that side tracks you from the plan, and debt reduction has to slow way down.

It seems like that has happened to us quite frequently in the last few months. Cars need repairs. Christmas gifts need purchased, and things just don't go quite as planned. The latest item to pop up into that list is a mattress.

Our mattress is old, but we really didn't have plans to replace. Making do with old stuff is part of our debt reducing plan. After several weeks of us both feeling not quite rested and a little stiff every morning, it finally occurred to us that perhaps the mattress was the problem. So, now we are shopping for mattress sets.

There certainly are a lot of choices out there with a huge range of price tags. So, here is where I am looking for a little input from you. Do we go memory foam, pillow top, or eurotop? I'd love a little feed back about your mattress shopping experiences.

These detours from our debt reduction plan are down right frustrating to me. I wish that we could just put everything else on hold until we are debt free. Life doesn't work that way, though. It is satisfying to remember that things "popping" up like this were all paid with credit a short time ago. Now, that we have a better handle on our finances, and a plan, these things can be paid with cash. That is a good feeling.

I have absolutely no experience with this, but Get Rick Slowly had a really good article on buying a mattress not too long ago: http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/2009/07/17/how-to-buy-a-mattress/

Some places allow you to buy JUST the mattress (foundation/box springs sold separately). Is your foundation (box springs) still usable? You can save if you JUST buy a mattress.

We bought a Serta twin mattress for J a few wks ago. I priced every place in Teays Valley (didn't care about brand) and Big Lots was the cheapest by far.

You can always add a pillowtop or memory foam mattress pad later if the model you want isn't affordable. I don't know about pricing, but I've seen demos on QVC & you could go there to see their video clips (qvc.com).

IMHO, the kind that you don't have to flip is great. You only have to rotate them.

What was important to us was NO TRANSFER OF MOTION. I didn't want to hear creaking and feel the bed move if Rick got up for a drink of water in the night. We bought the kind w/ individually sealed springs, not connected in rows (I forget the brand, could look it up). It's now 6 y.o. & we're still happy w/ it.

Definitely invest in a full zip cover for the new mattress, a high end one that's waterproof and recommended to prevent allergies. That way if one of your kids pees or pukes on your bed, your mattress is saved. Don't even sleep on the bed before putting that cover on it. Someone posted recently that over 20 years, a 90 lb mattress gains 20 LBS from dead skin cells. YUK! Mattress cover mandatory.

Good luck hunting.

We bought one a couple of years ago for the first time (before that, we were sleeping on my grandparents old mattress). Our old mattress was so bad, anything was an improvement. Now I would probably look for one without fireproofing since they're saying the chemicals are toxic.

I purchased a queen size pillowtop w/memory foam set for 900.00 almost 3 yrs ago and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. It was truly worth the price.

hi,we have a tempurpedic(SP?), its really amazing, the mattress came with my husband so it was a bonus. i remember coming home from a ten day vacation and all i wanted to do was get in that comfy bed. and we stayed at the marriot! so their beds were nice! lol. tempurpedics are pretty expensive if you get it from a dealer, try looking on ebay. they have this 90 day(or something) trial period and after that they cant sell those as brand new and they get sold other places. BUT if you talk to a dealer they will say that thats not true and the ones that you see not from a dealer are fake....i dont think so!!

Conventional mattresses are full of toxic chemicals that off gas while you sleep. We sleep on all natural futons that have not been treated with flame-retardant chemicals. You need a doctor's note to get them that way, but it is well worth it to avoid breathing toxic gasses all night long. (This site carries some healthy choices: /www.goodnightnaturals.com ) It is true that they are expensive, but the way I see it, you can pay to protect your good health today, or pay a lot more to try to regain it later. Good luck in your search! Malena
