Saves You Money, Time and Your Sanity

Long time readers, know that I'm a big fan of the library. We use the library a lot. It is a source of entertainment in the form of books, movies, and music. They offer fun and educational programs for the whole family. We participated in the summer reading program, and I just noticed that they are now offering family nights on Tuesdays that include games, crafts, and reading. I use the library to test run resource books before purchasing, and I am highly dependent on the library resources for our school projects and curriculum. There is a lot available there.

Going to the library to browse can be a little overwhelming though, especially if you have kids in tow. The best way to fix this problem is to browse online. We look for car insurance and groceries online, why not library books? Look through the online catalog before you go. Reserve all the books that you need online. They will be ready and waiting for you when you get there. If your library has a drive up window you can just pick up and go.

Another thing that can be overwhelming is keeping track of the books and when they are due. The first thing we do to combat this problem is to limit the number of books we check out. The kids would check out the whole library if I let them. We limit the books that they pick according to their age. My youngest is two. I let her pick two books. The oldest is ten. He is allowed ten books.

We have a designated spot for library books at home. They can take the books to their rooms to read, but when they are done the books go back to the designated spot.

If your library gives you a print out this can be a big help. Stick the printout on the fridge or in your planner. Then check the list when it is time to take the books back. I often will write the books' due date right into my planner. My library does not give a print out, but I can check my account online to be sure we have all the books.

The library is a great resource for free educational items and entertainment. Using the online catalog and having a system for keeping track of the books you bring home will help you use those resources to the fullest. You'll save money, time and keep your sanity.

Stephanie - check out libraryelf.com! It's a free service that automatically checks your library cards for you daily and sends you an email when something is due. We often have well over 100 items checked out of the library between the four of us and it has saved me a fortune in library fines. Plus I never have to remember to check cards or lists - the reminders just come in my inbox :)

I am very lucky in that my library delivers straight to my door at no extra cost. They also let me order books online and send me alerts when they are close to overdue so i can return them or renew them through their site. I heart my library.
