The Birthday Tea Party - Activities
The tea party was a lot of fun on Saturday. There were times that were a bit crazy, but I guess that is to be expected at a kids' party. We got out the dress up clothes, and asked all the guests to bring dress up clothes to share. Frankly, the girls would have been perfectly happy to just play with the dress up clothes the whole party, but we did have a couple of crafts, and of course the tea party.
To go along with their dress up clothes we made fancy fans and party hats. The fans were very simple. Just paste a paper doily onto colored paper. Fan fold, and the fold the bottom up a few inches to keep the fan in place. I didn't get any pictures of that craft, but you can see two in the picture at the left. (Those don't look like they got folded at the bottom though.) Some of the girls also tied their fans with ribbons.
The hat craft was a lot of fun, but for the age group we had (around 6) we almost needed one adult per child to help. Luckily the moms were happy to help out. We picked up hats at Goodwill for $0.50 a piece. We also found some flowers there for a couple bucks. We bought more flowers, ribbon, and craft glue at the craft store for around $12.
Each girl picked a hat to decorate with the supplies. Note: If you do this with a group of girls, clip the flowers off the stems before hand. It was a bit crazy trying to keep them supplied in flowers.
The girls (with help) made some pretty hats to wear for the tea party. For the party we broke out the linens, and these fun party plates my great aunt gave me. I tried to get a good picture of the plates, but this seems to be as good as it gets.
After the tea, the girls went back to play more dress up. Later we sang happy birthday, and Lydia opened presents. Then the girls went off to play more dress up, and of course to play with the new toys. The guests got a goody bag and a couple flowers from the centerpiece as they left.
Overall the party was a big hit, and we had a lot of fun. I did put some time into it, but not a lot of money. If you are interested in seeing more pictures, there are some posted at Adventures in the 100 Acre Wood.

That's the same craft we did at my daughter's 4th birthday party which was a tea. The girls loved them and it looks like your girls had a great time!
That is a great idea and super frugal too. I can't wait until I can do one of these parties with Emily! Thanks for all the super ideas!
I covet your glass party tray there? Is it vintage? I've been looking for some like that for a reasonable price.
