I Forgot the Homemade Cranberry Sauce

When I told you homemade stuffing was the only thing I was particular about at Thanksgiving, I lied to you. I didn't mean to, but I just forgot about the cranberry sauce. Cranberry sauce is so incredibly simple; three ingredients and about 20 minutes (plus chilling time) that require almost no effort, that I can not imagine what ever made the blog in the can so popular!

The recipe is right on the bag of cranberries, but here is the step by step for you:

1. Put 1 cup of sugar in a pot.

2. Add 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil.

3. Add a bag of cranberries. Bring back to a boil. Turn down heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

4. Allow to cool to room temperature. Then chill. The sauce will thicken as it cools.

Now really, why buy the stuff in the can? This recipe does give you a chunkier result than maybe you are used to. The berries are soft though, and I think it is a nice effect. If you prefer more of a jelly than a jam simply mash the cranberries through a wire sieve before cooling.

This recipe can be made now, and stored until the big day. I will be serving my turkey this year with this cranberry sauce and grape ketchup. If you would like cranberries for turkey day in another form, I highly recommend Cranberry Nut Bread.

One more thing done, and checked off the list. A few more things to pre-make. Most of the cleaning is done, except for the rooms I dread, ya know the ones with the toilets. The toilets that my three year old son can't seem to hit. I'm putting those off until the last possible second! How are your preparations coming?

I'd never even had cranberry sauce with Thanksgiving dinner until I met my husband. I was skeptical of eating it with Turkey but it tasted pretty good. I thought it would taste even better homemade so I gave it a shot and it really is sooo much better than the stuff in the can. I make it every year now.

I am getting there I think.

I LOVE homemade cranberry sauce but I have a 6yo who, when asked about what's really important to him on our Thanksgiving menu, said "that red, round, sliced stuff"!! Perhaps we'll have both.

I make the same recipe every year too except I add a tablespoon of orange juice concentrate to it.
I won't eat the stuff in the can either. After Thanksgiving any leftovers I have get put into pancake and sweet bread batter.
