I needed that reminder
The last few weeks have been so hectic, too hectic. There are my normal garden, animal and house responsibilities, plus there have been several additional time intensive things that I've had to do. I'm up before the sun and working virtually non stop until 11:00 night.
Even working like that, I'm not keeping up. Everywhere I look there are things that need done, often that should have been done a few days ago. The garden is bursting with beans and tomatoes. My kitchen is buried in canning equipment and jars of beans that I need to create a storage place for somewhere. (Last count, 88 quarts have been put up for winter.) I can't keep up with the harvest. I still haven't planted the cool weather vegetables I wanted to, and let's not even talk about the weeds!
I've been feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. I was starting to question whether all this work was worth it. Then I went to the grocery store. I sailed right by the canned and frozen vegetables. I only stopped briefly at the fresh produce. My bill was about 20% lower than normal. Ah, that felt good! Then I remembered that feeling would continue for much of the winter. We will be enjoying our superior (in my opinion) vegetables and a lower grocery bill. I also remembered that soon we will have our own meat for the freezer. I will be able to sail by the meat department too, while enjoying a huge cut in my grocery bill. Yes, there is a reward for all this work!
I'm still tired. My to do list hasn't gotten any smaller, but it was so nice to get a small taste of the payoff. It was a small reminder that all this work really is worth it! One that I really needed!

A friend asked me to help her can some dilly beans the other day (today we're making pickles)--it was a lot of work! I agree with you that it will be worth the effort come winter time, although the house is a bit messier with the focus on the garden and canning. Good luck with the rest of your endeavor and thank you for the encouragement!
Congratulations on the boutiful harvest! I know it is tiring, but it will be worth it. Think of the pride you'll feel when you pull those canned vegetables off the shelves this winter. Yummy!
I've been feeling overwhelmed too. I'm working from home now and I'm writing for 4 blogs, trying to take care of my 2 little ones, and the household responsibilities. It is a lot of work! This heat wave we're having seems to zap the energy right out of us.
Someone from church gave me a bag of tomatoes and cucumbers last night. I've been looking online for cucumber recipes. We're having a party for my husband this weekend and I think I'll put the cucumber to good use.
Perhaps you could donate some extras to a food ministry or get a friend to help you with your chores in exchange for some fresh produce. Just a thought. Good luck! :)
I always love to skip entire sections at the grocery store. Without a single deer this past winter, I didn't get to do that as often, but I'm dreaming about it for this year.
It was nice to see Tim write such a sweet post about you doing all that work, though. It's always nice to hear it- or read it as the case may be. :o)
isn't it great? Yes it does get ot be much too much sometimes..but when it ISN"T too much the feeling is wonderful!
88 quarts -wow! Your amazing!
that's great...i mean with all the savings, you must have felt so satisfied and proud with the fruits of your labor..so encouraging, at my end it's just eggs and a couple of leafy veggies as there isn't that much space to grow a garden...but we have someone in the neighborhood that supplies fresh and organic produce..
I forgot to mention too that it had been three weeks since I got groceries. I usually go every two weeks. A week late and still had a lower bill!
