Don't Waste Your Time or Money on Bad Movies

Going to the movies isn't cheap, especially if you are taking the whole family. Renting movies is a less expensive option, and of course, if your local theater offers free family movies in the summer, that is the way to go. Regardless of how much you are shelling out to see a movie, you don't want to waste your money or time on something that is poorly done, or that is full of things that don't fit with your family's values.

There are so many movies out there to choose from. Where do you begin to narrow down the choices? You can start with ratings. That can give you a general idea of what level of sex, profanity and violence is in a movie, but doesn't really tell you much about the quality of the movie or the overall tone of it.

Before going to the theater or renting a movie, we check with Plugged In Online. This site is affiliated with James Dobson and Focus on the Family. Search for the movies you are considering, and get a review from a family focused source. Reviews start with an overview of the story, then look at the positive, spiritual, sexual, violent, language, drug and alcohol, and other negative elements. Then end with a summary. The reviews are from a Christian perspective, but I think even if that is not your outlook, you would find the information valuable.

It only takes a few minutes to look at the review of a movie, and could save you from wasting money and time on something that is not quality or does not fit into your family values. When picking movies, Plugged In Online works for me.

Great resource! I use pluggedin a lot. Another great one I found is www.kids-in-mind.com It is even more specific. :)

Plus one for Plugged IN! I love it and we too have started using it. They give a very unbiased review and give us all the questionable bits before we get suprized by them in the theater!

Great tip. We frequently borrow movies from the library, both to save money and for the convenience for having them a week at a time, but it's always a disappointment to invest time in a lousy movie.

re: movies - one frugal thing we do is visit our local library - they have a ton of movies, children's, documentaries, opera :), travel. We borrow the movies on our library card and it doesn't cost anything except the trip to the library, which in warm weather we can do on our bikes!
And i second the pluggedin recommendation - i can check movies at the library on the computers there, so if i'm not sure, i can just hop over to the public use computers, type a few words in and have a deciding vote!
