Messed Up Priorities
Excuse me while I rant. You don't read me rant often, but this is a topic that just bugs me; sports. I enjoy sports. I participated in sports in high school. I still like to participate and watch sports. My issue is with the importance that we put on sports; with the big business of sports.
How many millions of dollars of our economy are directed toward sports? It is big business and consumers spend a boat load of money on it. Spending money to participate for exercise and recreation is one thing, but the huge amounts of money spent for pure entertainment and all the paraphernalia associated with professional sports is another. So much money is spent for tickets for games, for the world series, clothing, trading cards, sponsored products, and 100's of other things.
I don't blame the industry. We are the ones who support it. Teams couldn't pay players millions, there wouldn't be TV and radio dedicated to it, there wouldn't be merchandise on every corner and sports stars pedaling products if there wasn't the demand for it.
We are a nation of consumers in debt, with very little savings, yet we support this mega million dollar industry that is solely for our entertainment. It is a symptom of our messed up priorities. Don't even get me started on Hollywood.

Great rant! I feel the same way about Hollywood. I mean, what is the deal with actors who get paid millions a year--and then complain about their low pay? Puh-leeze. And all the TV shows and magazines and blogs devoted to celebrity lives... it seems like a waste.
You better not watch MTV's Sweet sixteen show. It's about sixteenth birthday parties. What a waste of money and time.
