Keeping Tabs on Your Finances
When is the last time you looked at your budget or cash flow? Do you know if you are meeting your personal finance goals? So many of us, myself included, make our budgets and goals, then go about our life without referring to them again. About the only thing we regularly keep track of is our checking account balance.
If you had a business, you'd use some sort of financial reporting software to run reports about your company's finances, and you would look at them regularly. Why don't we treat our personal finances in the same way? It is important to keep tabs on what is going on to help you meet your goals. It helps you spot trends, like my constantly rising fuel costs, and think about what to do with those trends. Can I drive less? Or do I need to adjust the budget? Checking regularly helps you see where you are succeeding and where you need to stick to the budget better.
If you use a software program, it is easy to run a report to see your cash flow, how much you are spending on what categories or to compare your actual spending with your budgeted amounts. If you use a cash system for many of your expenses, that is a very tangible way to keep tabs on the money. If you don't use a software program or cash system, it will require a little more work, but it is still very important.
So go take a look. How are you doing? Sticking to the budget? Any expenses higher than you planned? Do you need to make changes to the budget or to your spending? Thoughtful consideration of your finances is key to meeting your financial goals.
