I Don't Want to Be Rich
There is a prevailing sentiment in this country that if you made more money you'd be happier. More is better right? If you make more, then you can have more, life will be easier and then you will finally be happy. Why do we believe this lie?
Sure I would like to be able to pay off my debts, and then live debt free, with a little breathing room in the budget, but that doesn't mean that I want to be rich. Do I need to buy more stuff? Why would I want to be rich?
According to the article, "The rich aren't that happy after all," The rich spend more time working, running, and worrying, and are not any more likely than those with lower incomes to be satisfied with their lives. This report, "Youth Activities, Income and Substance Abuse" shows similar rates of drug abuse among youth 12- 17 regardless of income level. Perhaps the one difference here is that the rich may be better able to send their child for drug rehab than the poor.
Would I like to be rich? No thanks. I'll pass. A simple life, and pleasure in simple things that is how I want to live.

Me neither! All people ever talk about is money. As long as I can pay my bills with a little extra, I'm fine. I think trying to be a close family would be hard if you were rich. I'm happy now!
I'm with both of you! And I don't like credit cards. My opinion is that if you can't pay for it, you don't need it. Now, unexpected expenses, i.e., car repairs, etc. are an exception. At those times, I'm thankful we have credit. But you can bet the first priority after that is to get it paid off! To me, it's better to save the money and THEN buy what we want/need.
I am with all of you! Give me time to play with my kids (outside, with sticks in the dirt LOL) over more money any day.
I agree that money isn't everything. Breathing room, yes! I would love some of that. Rich, nope! I will settle for the life I am leading any day compared to working and running around like a maniac!
My sentiments exactly!
Thanks for putting into words what I already knew in my heart and mind!
I completely agree! I am happy with the income we have now. The only thing we have not been able to do that I would like to do is own a home and I know that will happen some day.
I agree! There is so much more to happiness than having money and stuff. Thanks for sharing this with the Carnival of SAHMs!
I am so with you! I found you over at the Carnival of Debt Reduction, and I'm glad I did!
I want to own a home, a car and go to live in the same little town where are my parents and brother. Its is a dream and to get it I need to be rich. Be rich is relative. My income is $75 a month. So yes, I want to be rich. Sorry. This computer? isnt mine of course.
What you want is to be HAPPY.
Insecurity and uncertainty (where is my next meal coming from, where will I sleep tonight?) make most of us unhappy, so we certainly need some amount of money.
Too many people get caught up and go overboard with that concept - there's never enough money for them to feel safe and happy.
I like money, but I like free time more. I work for myself, and I work just hard enough to get the things we need without work consuming my life. I've found a pretty good balance: sometimes I get stressed by too much work, sometimes I need a little more money, but MOST of the time I have enough money AND a stress-free, happy life.
It isn't always easy to get there, of course. But it's worth striving toward.
I agree and will bookmark this page and be back to follow you more.
