Garage Cabinets in the Kitchen?

Some days it seems as if we will never build the house we've been talking about since we moved here, but I still like dreaming about it. Recently I was asked if I would consider using garage cabinets as kitchen cabinets. My first thought was no way, but then I looked at what they were talking about. The Diamond Plate Cabinets are nice. They won't rust and can be coated to any color you like.

I used to be a big fan of Trading Spaces. Probably would be still except we don't have cable now. I can totally see cabinets like these in one of their designs. Well, I guess they might not fit into the budget for that show, but you get the idea.

Back to the question though, would I use them in my kitchen? Probably not. We are planning an earth bermed home with a natural look. Metal cabinets don't really fit in. In another type home they may work well though.

I loved Trading Spaces, too! Well, until they fired Paige as the host. I didn't think it was as fun without her.

One of the big advantages of using garage or industrial cabinets and work benches in the kitchen is that you can easily move the freestanding ones on wheels.

I actually lived in a garage for a while and was able to move the "furniture" about repeatedly until I found the perfect position for everything. (The fridge ended up next to the bed, making it easy to grab a late night snack or drink. :) )

Another advantage of garage and industrial cabinets is that they are much more resistant to chemical and impact damage, so they don't stain as readily or fall apart so easily.

I enjoyed reading your blog, BTW, and was pleased to find I'm not the only one who gets anally retentive when it comes to household finances. Each and every day I know to the last penny what we've spent and how much we have remaining out of the monthly budget.

When we go shopping, I take a limited amount of cash and mentally add the cost of the groceries as we go through the aisles. I try to underspend by a minimum of 5% - just for the challenge of seeing if we can get everything we genuinely need and still have change. Sad or what! :D
