Embracing the Plaid Couch
What a fantastic group of readers are here at Stop the Ride! I love all the comments you left on To Slipcover or Not to Slipcover? There were a wide range of opinions and lots of great suggestions. Thanks so much!
So, what to do with my retro plaid couch and chair that are in very good condition? Should I get something different? Not that I really thought we could get new furniture, but I browsed a bit around Bush furniture. That was a good reality check. Nope can't buy new. In fact, there isn't really room in the budget for used either.
Now that I've convinced myself that we are keeping the lovely plaid set, we come back to the question of whether to leave as is or to slip cover. Slip covers are not cheap and there are mixed reports about their effectiveness. I like the vintage sheet idea presented in the comments. We did cover the big yellow couch I mentioned in the other post from our early days of marriage, with a sheet, but I would probably not keep up with adjusting it daily or hourly now that there are four kids. While the plaid would not be my first choice, it is tolerable to me. It matches the colors in the room, it hides any dirt or spills well, and it is in a large room with a high ceiling so the plaid doesn't seem overpowering.
Currently, I do have a cream throw that I drape over the back of the couch. It does help to soften the plaid on that piece. I think I will keep my eye out for a deal on something similar to use on the chair. I have some throws with a cream background that match the furniture colors. They help, but the fabric has a very fall feel to it. I think I will take the suggestion to look for pillows with a gold fabric, or I may even get brave a sew covers for the pillows I already have.
When I make the updates (it may be awhile!) I will be sure to post about it! Thanks again for all your wonderful input!

We have a blue couch we need to get rid of. I guess that would be hard to take back to W.V.! Darn, my plan to get rid of it failed again!
If you have a sheet and safety pins, you can make a no-sew slip cover.
Put the sheet over the chair, and safety pin where a seam should go. Pin it a lot - you are essentially making a seam. Then flip it inside out.
Also, putting a piece of PVC pipe, dowel, or sawed off broom handle in the crack will keep it tucked in.
