Paper in My Compost

I picked up a paper shredder at a yard sale a few weeks back. I paid $3 for it, and I am certainly getting my money's worth from it! Every piece of junk mail, every envelope, all the kids scrap paper, and discarded coloring pages have met the shredder. Our office trash that is usually overflowing by trash day, now has very little in it.

Shredding those papers helps protect us from identity theft, and that is a good thing, but what we are really shredding the paper for is our compost pile. Every time that shredder basket fills up, I take it out and dump it on the compost pile along with our coffee grounds, tea bags, egg shells, and other kitchen waste. Well except vegetable trimming, around here they go to the rabbits. They use those trimming to create their own waste that greatly enhances our compost.

There are so many things you can compost. We are still learning. Want some ideas of things you can compost? How about a list of 163 things! You may be surprised at some of the things listed there.

What a great idea to compost them! I'm still mad at my husband for breaking our $60 shredder because he HAD to see if it would shred a credit card! I guess boys will be boys. That was five years ago and we never bought another one. I've heard that some new ones do shred cards. I may have to look into that for Father's Day. Have a great day!

I really need to buy a shredder and I am keeping my eyes peeled at the thrift store for one. I would have never thought to compost this- great tip!!

Great tips! We do the same thing. We compost just about anything that's not protein! LOL. I'm linking this to my post today about frugal gardening tips. :)

I'm catching up on some older posts around here....I can't wait until we move so I can compost. I think I've mentioned that I also want to have a red worm composting bin, along with one for yard waste etc...It's amazing, thanks for the great link!

Wow, I've only been on your blog for a minute and already loving it. Especially 13 ways to use dryer lint. LOL. I wanted to write and tell you that I too have been researching using paper shreds in compost. I posted about it on my blog. What kind of shredder do you use? I always use a crosscut shredder, but worry that it might make the shreds too small for composting, do you know?

I'd think smaller would be better for the compost.
