My Little Herb Garden

Back in April, I made a little herb garden near my kitchen door. I re-purposed the frame of a deck gate to make a frame for my herbs. I dug up the soil, and added rabbit manure. Then I planted seeds; cilantro, basil, thyme, and oregano. In the middle, I put a couple flower seeds just for fun. I stapled the seed bags on a stick to use as plant markers. My three year old took all of the markers out, so for awhile I wasn't sure what was where, and still can't remember what the flowers are. Here is my little herb garden now.

The cilantro is ready to use. The basil will be soon. The thyme is coming along. The oregano well, I am not sure what happened to it. You will also notice a couple of tomato plants. Volunteers, courtesy of the rabbit manure. I should leave one and take out the others, but I have a hard time thinning plants. I know it is better for the plants, and for my yield, but it just seems so wasteful to throw out perfectly good plants! Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm happy with my little herb garden. I will get a lot of use out of it this summer. My plan is to let some go to seed at the end of the season. I will save the seeds, and plant them in containers for my kitchen over the winter. Then save seeds from the winter plants for next summer too. This should provide year round fresh herbs for almost no cost. YUM!

I hate thinning out plants...especially tomatoes! Usually, I let them come up wherever they like. Volunteers are never high maintenance and you never know what you're going to get!

Clever repurposing! I've seen old ladders and wagon wheels used similarly with herbs to great effect.

I feel the same way you do...and last year, I had a ton of tomatoes that never turned red. I'm determined to thin them out this year. That is...if it ever gets warm enough to plant them!
My kids gave me an herb garden (in a big pot) for Mother's Day. I just love the smell of it all, don't you?

Why not just put them in containers and have a few container garden plants?

I tend to move them to another area if they need thinned. lol! I hate getting rid of perfectly good plants...

I'm glad I'm not the only one with "that problem!"

Mom2fur - There is a way to save those green tomatoes and have them get ripe over the winter. I've not tried it though anyone else?

My neighbor has tried ripening the tomatoes and she declares it works great! Don't you just lay them on paper bags or something?
