Spring Plantings TT # 7

I'm doing a little happy dance. We finally have a real garden. For several years we didn't have the space for a garden. We did some container gardening at those homes. One year we were part of a CSA, Community Supported Agriculture.

Now that we live on a 100 Acres, you'd think we'd have all the room we'd need for a garden, not so. There is this small matter of trees covering the land to contend with. The garden spot never got cleared last year. We tried to plant a few things in some places that had been cleared for electric lines, but the deer feasted on our little plantings.

This year we still haven't cleared the spot we want to use for garden, but have gone with plan B. The garden is right beside the house. It is small, but I'm happy to be diggin' in the dirt. Our neighbor tilled it a couple of days ago, and yesterday I planted a few things in it.

Here is a list of things I planted yesterday. They aren't all in the vegetable garden. I also have a spot around some trees that I'm making a flower bed using many transplanted wild plants.

Flower Bed
1. Wild Iris
2. Wild Daffodils
3. Wild Fern
4. Pansies (free flowers a neighbor gave to Lydia)
5. Sweet Peas (from some free seeds)

Vegetable Garden
6. Nasturtiums
7. Sunflowers
8. Marigolds
9. Spring Salad Mix
10. Leaf Lettuce
11. Spinach
12. Sugar Snap Peas (Hoping it isn't too late for these.)
13. Swiss Chard

Why the flowers in the garden? The sunflowers and nasturtiums are edible. The sunflowers I planted in a odd little spot of the garden. Our garden in not square, it is more of a cone shape.

The marigolds and nasturtiums also serve another purpose. The deer don't like them, so I planted them along the edges of the garden. They also deter many insects that will eat up your vegetables. We've used marigolds in the garden since I was a kid, but I am learning a lot more about companion gardening. I like the concept but am very new to it.

I enjoy gardening, and have gardened in some capacity; vegetables, containers, or flowers since I was a child. I still don't feel very knowledgeable though. Our soil is full of clay, something I've not gardened in before. We have put compost and manure on. We will see how our garden grows.

Congrats on your new garden! There's nothing any nicer than playing in the dirt...it soothes the soul. :) Great TT idea!

Wow, a real garden! I'd like to have one, although I'm not much of a gardener. Happy Spring!

My TT is a list of things I do on my computer.

I'd love a garden too! I'm not sure where you live, but peas are generally good to be planted anytime up through May, so you should be ok.

Growing up, my mother's garden always had marigolds around it too. I think she said it was for keeping rabbits away.

My Chard went nuts last year and I just loved it. It was like having fresh spinach all summer long, and at the end of the summer I finally figured out I could use it to make a cabbage roll type deal too! Yummy.

I planted spinach and peas yesterday too. I would have liked to have gotten them in about three weeks ago, but hopefully it should still be fine.

Note to self: remember to plant nasturtiums!
