Wild Foods TT #5
Spring is coming and I am starting to think about a garden. I am also thinking about the harvest of some other foods we didn't plant or tend. If you are a newer reader, you may not know about the unusual frugal hobby my family enjoys. We forage for food, or as I have said before, we eat weeds, or maybe the nicer way to put it, we enjoy wild foods. Here are a list of the foods we have found and eaten. The links are to posts that Tim or I have written about finding or eating the food.
1. Poke (fixed link)
2. Blackberries
3. Day Lily
4. Queen Anne's Lace
5. Milkweed
6. Sumac
7. Deer
8. Grouse
9. Black Walnuts
10. Chicken of the Woods
11. Apples
12. Pears
13. Parasol Mushrooms
If you are interested in this hobby I highly recommend Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants by "Wildman" Steve Brill. He also has a web site here.

Ahhh... Here in Montana, wild foods are a way of life. Deer, Elk and Antelope, plus huckleberries (HUGE business here), raspberries, cherries and apples and all kinds of fowl.
You can have all of the milkweed, though! ;)
Your #1 link goes to the grouse post and I still don't know what poke is and whether I want to eat it. ;)
I have a great book called Edible Wild Plants that I love. It has a section on "poisonous look a likes" for every entry!
Have you ever found wild asparagus? That's my "holy grail" of a hike that I haven't done yet!

I've had 2,7, 9, 11, and 12. I don't do any kind of mushrooms!
2, 7, 8, 11, 12 -- I've had these from wild sources. This is a very adventurous list! I like the way you think. :)
Wow! I am amazed by you! All my food comes from the store! :(
We haven't found many wild foods around here. Put we do go apple and berry picking. I'm hoping to plant some berry bushes on our new property. I LOVE all kinds of berries. Yum!
Growing up, we always went picking wild foods.
I love apples and pears. I also love wild strawberries. Very interesting post.
Very interesting list. I can't even say I've heard of all of the things on it. I've had apples, pears and mushrooms. Tried venison once. Not my thing.
I'm going to have to research a little now because to me, poke is something my kids do to each other in order to annoy each other in the car!
Happy TT-- Jessica
Well, besides wild game, we have had experience with Elderberries. My Grandma makes the BEST elderberry pie. We are actually going to put in our own plants so we don't have to "wonder" about the wild ones.
She also used to harvest wild mushrooms. It was a thanksgiving staple & no one ever got sick, so she must have known what she was doing! Not sure if I have that kind of confidence.
