Shave, Wax, or Sugar?

I've been very neglectful of my razor lately. In the winter, it really doesn't bother me to let the hair grow a bit. Actually, it wouldn't bother me in the summer either, I don't think, except for the stares that my thick black hair would produce. Who knew I was such a slave to cultural norms?

Spring is coming, and with it capris, shorts and tank tops; the exposure of places that haven't seen a razor for awhile. So, I am thinking about how to remedy this hairy situation.

There is of course, the razor. My poor razor has been awfully lonely lately. I even have a box of new blades for it. Shaving is ok, but the results only last for so long. In the summer, I really need to shave at least every other day.

So, I am thinking about waxing. I've had my eyebrows waxed. It isn't so bad, but then again that is a very small area. How would waxing my legs be? There is a lot more surface to cover there! Are the longer lasting effects worth the pain?

Then there is body sugaring. This is a process I didn't even know about, until a few weeks ago. Hair removal is supposed to last up to two months, and be gentle to the skin. The sugaring gel sticks to the hair, but not the skin. The price of wax and sugaring products seems to be about equal.

What to do? What to do? Should I stick with what I have, shave, and be ready to repeat the process again and again and again? Or should I purchase one of the other more lasting options? I would love to hear your input on sugaring or waxing! Hmmm. . . . I wonder if I could make my own sugaring gel or wax kit? Wouldn't that be a great Make It From Scratch!

They carry various brands and also produce some of their own products. Make up, acne medication, PMS supplements, hair loss, and of course, hair removal products can be found there for both men and women. Well, I I guess the men don't need the PMS supplements, and hopefully not the makeup either. The point is they have natural health and beauty supplies for both sexes!

Saying that you have been neglectful of your razor is the understatement of the year...

Steph,

Here is a recipe:
Wax recipe

Ingredients

2 cups granulated sugar
¼ cup water
¼ cup lemon juice

Method

Pour the sugar, water and lemon juice in a saucepan, and heat it over a low flame. Keep stirring the mixture until all the sugar has melted, and you have a thick brown liquid. Let it cool slightly.

Waxing technique

Test the temperature before applying the wax to your skin. It should be hot, but not scalding, or you can burn yourself.
Once the wax has cooled slightly, test it on your finger. Blow on it to cool it with your breath and apply it to your skin with a butter knife, in the direction of hair growth.
Place a clean cotton cloth strip on the wax and yank it against the direction of hair growth.
Wipe the area clean with a cold cloth after you’ve finished waxing.
You could also apply ice to the waxed area, to close and tighten pores.
You may notice that your skin has turned red, or that you have tiny bumps on the skin immediately after waxing. This is a normal reaction, and the redness and bumps should disappear within an hour. Applying a moisturizer or soothing lotion will help.

If you can still see sugar particles in the wax, the hair will probably not come out and you would need to re-cook the wax.

Note: Cloth strips can be found at sally beauty store...

My roommate used to do this and her aunt made the sugaring wax for her. She just used a piece of flannel fabric and tore it into strips and then would throw those in the laundry when she was done. She had good results with it...

Sugaring and waxing may be two of the few things better left to the salon. I was witness to a failed at home waxing manuver that escalated into an at home waxing failure caked with peanut butter,(cause she was told that would remove the wax), we have to call someone quick find me a long skirt fiasco. Be careful!! I do however love my legs waxed now only twice a year and comes in softer.

I'm not big on waxing (never sugared) but my skin is really sensitive and I get a rash for at least a week so I didn't find it worth it!

i used to be a devout sugaring diva (even before it became trendy) and I loved it. But it was a little messy and you had to clean everything in a 5 foot radius because it was sticky, and then shower after to get the sticky residue off.
Now that I have two kids I just don't have that kind of time- a good razor and some 'kiss my face' shaving cream and you're golden. and hairless.

I might be the weird one - I just let it grow and poopoo anyone who doesn't like it! Good luck on your search though!

My wife wants a Brazilian but it sounds like a damaging, one that is expensive.

Go natural... no, wait. Maybe not. That must be a frustration.

Oh my gosh I was just going to blog about this! How funny! I plan to try the sugaring. I found a homemade recipe...I've been experimenting with a lot of homemade beauty recipes lately. I'll blog it soon.

I'm afraid my dh would say the same about me! It's not at the top of my priority list. LOL.

I first saw sugaring done in Egypt about 10 years ago and that was the first I had heard of it. I haven't tried it myself though.

Hi Stephanie,

I would suggest you stick to sugar wax. As you have said, it only sticks to the hair and not to the skin. It is better than heated wax. Trust me. I have tried it. Heated wax is more painful.

Shaving is okay but waxing is better for large areas. It is best that you talk to some of your friends who have tried it out so you have an idea on what your results will be.

Best of Luck!
