Rag Rolling to Curl Hair

Lydia (5) is such a girlie girl. She loves clothes, make up (pretend dress up only at this point), babies, and has even picked out her husband to be. Let me tell you, she was created this way. It was not learned from me. Subject matter for another post perhaps.

More to the topic, she has been asking me for months to curl her hair. She has long, straight hair. It is fine, but there is a lot of it. It doesn't hold curl well. After the first time she asked, I braided it in lots of tiny braids one night after her bath.

The next morning we took the braids out, and she had a huge head of crimped hair. Not exactly curly, but she liked it. I didn't like how long it took or the fact the ends were still straight where I didn't get the braids all the way to the bottom.

The next time she had bugged me so much I couldn't stand it, oh um. . . I mean when she asked me politely, I used a curling iron. It also took quite awhile. It looked very pretty and I sprayed it well, knowing her hair does not hold curl very well. It was straight again before we got to church.

I've been promising her we would try something different. I don't use curlers. I don't own curlers. I really didn't want to buy curlers for my five year old. When all else fails, go back to the old fashioned way.

I decided to try rag rolling her hair. I checked a few sites online. If you'd like to see, I went here and here. Then last night we tried it.

The websites recommended using an old bed sheet. I didn't have one to cut up, so I used what I had. This is a rag the hospital gave us when we took Nolan into the ER. I cut the rag into strips about 1 inch by 6 inches.

Then I got her hair damp by dipping the brush into a cup of water and brushing out sections. I rolled the hair around the rag. Then, rolled to the top and tied the rag off. The sites said to tie in a bow, but I wasn't able to do that. I just tied them once and they held fine.

It did take a bit to get the hang of how to start the hair on the rag. Though it didn't show up in the picture quite as well as I thought it would, you can tell a big difference between the first side I rolled and the second.

All rolled up, we sent her to bed. She reported that the rags were very comfortable to sleep in, and didn't bother her at all. In fact, she said it was like having an extra pillow.

In the morning, Tim and I unrolled her hair. She had lovely curl. It didn't quite curl all the way to the top, so next time I will have to be more careful to roll all the way. She was happy with the curls. I liked them much better than the braids. Daddy was worried that she looked too pretty and is growing up too fast.

Of the three ways we have tried to curl Lydia's hair, rag rolling is by far my favorite. It is free. The time spent was about the same as the other methods, maybe even shorter than braiding. The results are much nicer. The curls were pretty and I may play with using larger sections of hair next time. The curls also lasted. At the time of this post her hair was still curly and pretty. So next time she is "asking politely," we will be getting the rag strips back out.

Hi, found you thru the fiveminutes4mom site. My mom always did rag curls on my sisters and I. She always put our hair in two pony tails the kind up high side of your head. I have to say the curls always came out better and lasted longer. Will have to try this on my daughters hair she is so into having curls to but it takes way to long to do it with an iron and it doesn't stay very long either.

When I was little I actually did my own hair. I read about it in a Laura Ingalls Wilder book and just had to try it.

The curls are just beautiful! What a darling little girl you have! Aren't girls so much fun?

Oh my gosh! Her hair looks just like Madison's like that! How adorable!! I have the same hair type as Lydia- pin straight and baby fine. Since it won't hold, I don't even own a curling iron anymore. In fact, I can't even remember the last time one touched my hair. I don't even have rollers, either. I have often thought of rag-rolling, but haven't tried it. I'm going to have to give it a shot before I cut it all off.
I'd like to hear that post about how Lydia didn't get this from you.

Wow! That turned out so well. I love it!! I may have to give that a try on munchkin for Easter.

I've done the braids with sponge rollers on my hair before, but I've never done rags.

Oh, her hair looks so cute! Her hair would probably look nice doing those braid waves...braiding wet, and then take them out dry. That gives straight hair a lot of body.

Lydia's hair is lovely, whether straight or curly, IMHO. But, oh, those curls! Would have been fun to see a photo of her face with the rags all tied up. Too cute! It must be fun to have a girlie-girl, but it does take patience, eh?
I think our Hershberger was actually quite soft-hearted. It is said he would weep when his children wouldn't do what he said.

Those curls are just gorgeous and she is so beautiful. Maybe I'll have a girl next to try this on??

She looks lovely! As a child of an older (and old-school) Mom, I'm familiar with both pin- and rag curls. Rag curls are very gentle on the hair, while pin curls are a little rougher; to sleep in them you'd need to tie a head scarf over your head. Having been blessed with a head of naturally super-curly hair, I've done modified versions of both - using large sections of hair - to loosen the curl and create softer waves. Happy curling, and sometimes the old ways are best!

I love it! I have to try this. I have long painfully straight hair and this might just get it to curl!

I have a 5 year old daughter that was also born as a girly-girl. If you ever DO want to purchase something to speed things up, I've had good success with the Lock 'N Roll curlers - the kind that heat up on a base.

Girls will be girls.
I have a three-year old girl, whose hair, unfortunately for her, does not grow as fast as she would like it to. She wants to braid them and wear a "kunjalam " like her aunt did at her wedding, while all I can manage to do is put up a teeny weeny little pony tail. She is very "polite" about it, I am thinking of fertilizing her head to see if hair grows faster ! :)

That looks really cute - thanks for showing us.

Looks so cute--I used to do foamy rollers with my little girls' hair and loved the way it curled right up.

I use this method often on my hair. It works every time, and the curls last until i decide to wash my hair!

My hair is like your daughters. I can't get curls to stay in it, even though my hair is naturally wavy. So this way is great!

Hi there -

Fine hair can be so frustrating as it doesn't hold the curl for very long. I applaud your commitment to finding a solution.

My sister and I both grew up in the "spiral curl" era, and could not afford the perms to get the curl. SO, we used these foam rods and found it frustrating to not get curl towards the root. Our solution was to twist the section of hair before rolling. You may want to try this to get the curl all the way up to the top.

Just be careful not to overwet the hair, as it takes a little longer to dry this way. When you unroll, use your fingers to separate the curls. This way you won't get the fuzzy look that sometime happens with rollers.

Good luck!

Gorgeous curls!

I have hair that's not straight, but not curly either - more frizzy, which is really irritating.

I don't like using straighteners and was looking for an 'old-fashioned' way to curl hair - I'm definitely going to try the rag curl method!

One of my nieces has poker straight her, whilst her sisters have curly/wavy hair which she feels quite envious about at times. I think I'll curl her hair for her on her birthday :)

Just put my hair into rags... with a bit of luck it will have worked by the morning...

I first saw this method on an early 90's film called A Little Princess set in the victorian era, and was remenising, so decided to try the method again...

Rae,

Love to hear how it turns out for you. I've gotten much better at this in the last year. It took some practice for me.

Hiya. Another idea is to do two big braids like pigtails, and then put the very ends into a rag roll. It will result in nice pretty waves going down, with little ringlets at the bottom! And that's something that you can do in a snap! :D

Oh I also wanted to ask if you brushed out the curls after taking the rags out? It looks like you did, which might have created the poofiness. If you do the rag curls again just use your hands and organize them, or get a really wide toothed comb and use that. It'll keep the integrity of the curls better!

Thanks for the suggestions. That would be much faster! This was our first attempt here, and yes it did get brushed. We learned our lesson! :)

I just did my daughter's hair tonight. She doesn't like the sponge curlers because they hurt her head, but says the rags feel fine. We used old washcloths for our rags.

My grandmother used to do my mom's hair this way so I thought I would give it a shot. We'll see what happens tomorrow morning. :) Your daughter is adorable!

Teresa,
Hope you like it. It did take a few tries for me to really get the hang of it. You cans see the latest try in our Easter pictures

Hi.
My hair is thick, straight and doesnt hold curl very well. I had a shower one night and didnt dry it. I then braided my hair (I did about twelve). The next morning I woke up and took them out. My hair was a ball of fluff. It was so bad i wore it in a tight bun all day. When i applied the rags a couple of weeks later after a shower. They were really lovely. I managed to reach about 3cm away from the top. They really looked affective and professional! I would really recommend it for someone who fancies a change! They last untill you shower next aswell!

Thanks!

yay! ^___^ I found you through a google search and I'm so happy I did.

My material grandmother ended up doing all of her daughters and myself (one of only two granddaughters) in rag rollers. Along with pictures to prove it. I remember the rollers themselves being comfortable, but dear lord, she tried them really really tight...not to mention I have fat and I mean sausage sized curls when I took them out. (didn't think to finger comb them)

Anyway, finishing the ramble I've been wanting to do something different with my hair and remembered her doing that, but couldn't recall the exact way she'd done it. Now that I've found you. I can attempt to do it again...though I'll probably need an extra pair of hands.
