Odd Recipes from My Favorite Cook Book - TT #6

I'm always talking about my favorite cookbook. (this link will show you a 1903 edition. I have 1965, but couldn't find a photo for that one. There are many, many editions of this cook book.) It is where I turn most often when I want to make something from scratch. It is from 1965, and well, people ate some different things back then. I thought I'd share some of the odd things. I chose 13 chapters and one thing from each chapter.

1. Appetizers - Molded Sardine Appetizer

2. Beverages - Kentucky Eggnog. Wonder why I picked this? Check out the ingredients:

3 dozen eggs
3 C sugar
1 pint whiskey
1 pint rum
1 pint gin
1 pint brandy
1 gallon heavy cream
I've never had eggnog like that!

3. Breads - Prune Buns Bohemian

4. Cakes- Pyramid Icebox Cake

5. Frostings & Fillings - Fig Meringue Filling

6. Eggs & Cheese- English Monkey

7. Meat- Sweet & Sour Calf's Brain

8. Preserves - Radish Preserves

9. Vegetables - Celery in Wine

10. Soup - Oxtail Soup

11. Sandwiches - Hot Bacon and Peanut Butter Sandwich

12. Poultry - Stuffed Goose Neck

13. Salads - Molded Sweetbread Salad
Do you know what sweetbreads are?

Wouldn't that make an interesting dinner party menu?

Thursday Thirteen.

Although I know what sweetbreads are, a part of me wishes I didn't. And I still can't eat polenta (had a lovely dish last night at a restaurant) without remembering the time I made Chicken with Polenta and my husband said, "I liked the chicken, but didn't like the placenta."

Heheh. Celery in Wine huh.
That eggnogg would really do a number on me. I love eggnog, but that sounds wayyy to potent. I wonder what crazy recipes are in my books hehe.
Thanks for sharing!

Prunes bun? Celery in wine? Those are odd, but definitely intriguing.

At first I thought you could make meals for me, then I decided NO, can't do the eggnog, or celery or prunes or several others.

Do you think my Rachel Ray cookbook has such recipes???

Thanks for visiting my TT

Umm, I think I may have to stick to my own favorite cookbook...

So which book is actually your favorite? The link went to a page with a bunch of different cookbooks shown.

Happy TT, and check out my blog for another food-themed TT :).

The fig thing sounds kinda good. Figs are making a comeback ya know. Martha & Rachel Ray are using them!!!

Interesting food for sure!

Thanks for fixing the link, that does sound like a good one to have around. My old faithful for all the basics is the New (get the irony) Pillsbury Cookbook, circa 1972 or so.

I have the 1965 edition of that book too, and the funny thing I keep noticing is how often the page numbers in the index are completely wrong! Wonder if they were sipping some of that Kentucky Eggnog while editing the cookbook.

Sweetbreads...brainy stuff. Yuck.
Peanut butter and bacon is really good, but you haven't lived until you've tried fried baloney and peanut butter, LOL!
