More on Popcorn
Our "discovery" about popcorn brands inspired me to test another tip I had heard about popcorn: it will pop better if refrigerated. Does it really work? Sunday night we put it to the test.
We started with two bags of microwave popcorn of the same brand. One had been stored in the refrigerator and one in a box on top of the refrigerator. We popped them for equal amounts of time. Just by looking at the popped bags, I really couldn't tell much difference.
We emptied both bags into the same sized bowls. The bowl with popcorn from the refrigerator looked slightly fuller, but it was still hard to tell.
We ate the popcorn and this is what was left. The bag from the box had about twice as many "old maids" as the bag that had been refrigerated.
So the tip held true. To get the most out of your popcorn money, store the popcorn in the refrigerator.
Our next popcorn test will be DIY Microwave Popcorn, as seen at Get Rich Slowly. I have a pretty good supply of microwave popcorn, so it may be awhile until I get to this test. Feel free to try it yourself and let us all know the results!

What a good experiment! We eat popcorn every Sunday night, so this is a great tip for us. Thanks!
My daughter's class did a consumer experiment by comparing various brands of popcorn and she swears the Pop Secret is the best for ounces popped, flavor and cost.
It cracked me up because she became such a little Ralph Nader/consumer authority on the issue and felt so strongly about it. It was a hoot.
We have made DIY popcorn for years. I don't add the oil to the bag but I add butter when it is done. There are alot of unpopped kernels in the bag, but it is cheap and it tastes good!
This was a topic of hot debate that I had always wondered about. Some people said it was better to keep it refrigerated while others had suggested storing it in a cool dry place.
Now I have fifty pounds of popcorn in our house (as it was so cheap at Sam's) so I doubt I could store it in our fridge, but I did throw it all in a Tupperware container. Hopefully it will still keep it popping for awhile.
Thanks so much for the scoop on popcorn!
BTW- I have done the DIY popcorn and blogged about it. I would not recommend putting oil in the mix unless you put a couple of paper towels down in your microwave. It makes a greasy mess through the paper bag. I hope you have fun experimenting!!
On Amy I must have missed that. When was that post?
50 lbs. WOW You could keep a smaller container in the refrigerator though! It seems being cold just helps it pop better.
Okay, not microwave popcorn, but I'd thought I'd share our thrifty popcorn. We buy huge bags of it at the discount grocery store, and pop in in a large pot with a lid. You only have to cover the tops of the corn kernels with some healthier Canola Oil. It pops quickly without burning on medium on our electric stove top. We also repop leftovers, which saves a little.
We don't have to shake the pan or anything, but it needs watching because it can burn quickly once the popping slows.
The freezer works real good on regular popcorn. You know... the kind you put in oil and pop on your stove.
Regular popcorn is a lot cheaper than microwave popcorn. Plus it is actually quicker and better tasting.
