A Little Advice Please.

I've been invited to participate in a contest at Free Money Finance. It looks like it will be a great source of frugal information. The best frugal articles are pitted against each other in a March Madness bracket style. Comments are taken into consideration and then Free Money Finance determines a winner.

I believe they invited all who participate in the Festival of Frugality, and that the contest is open to others who would like to play. I do not expect to win. There are some very talented and knowledgeable bloggers among those who I suspect will participate, but I thought it would still be fun to join in. To avoid looking like a total country bumpkin, I'm asking for your input.

As stated at Free Money Finance, "Criteria for great articles is as follows: 1) practicality of the post 2) how interesting/provocative/unique it is, 3) the "personal-ness" of it and 4) its impact on net worth." Number four is my weakness!

I can enter up to four posts. I dug through the archives,(I may do the same at 100 Acre Wood, but will post there separately if I do. ) and found five post that I like.

  1. Kellen Gets a Lesson on Brand Names
  2. 200,000
  3. Cloth Diaper Wraps
  4. Singing the Praises of Resale
  5. Four for Christmas
Maybe it is too much to ask you to go back and read five of my older posts, but would you? I am not sure any of them are really worthy, (criteria #4 is killing me!) but I would love to hear your input.

Thanks and I will let you know when the contest begins so we can all go check out the best of the frugal articles.

The first one is fun--

How great that you're invited to participate. I'll have to read the rest of your posts you have listed.

Ok- read them all- gonna use #5 for now on- why didn't I think of that before?

I really liked the first one(popcorn/Kellen)- it taught Kellen something ( very valuable) that you could have probably said until you were blue in the face, and he still wouldn't have got-

go for the contest, if nothing else it will be a learning experience for next time!

I vote for 1 2 4 & 5. In my humble opinion they have the biggest impact on the #4 criteria you are worried about! The cloth diapers (having used them myself) only created more laundry for me (if we went too long between changes there would be complete outfits (hers & mine!) & were expensive plus I found I had to have regular diapers on hand for outings & overnight. SO I don't feel that using them affected MY bottom line any.

I think posts 2-5 fill the criteria best. :) Good luck...I've done the Festival of Frugality before and it was fun. I'll be rooting for ya'.

I like the cloth diaper wrap one. If you just add a figure on what you saved by not using pre-fab diapers, that one would meet all your requirements, right?

Wow, that contest looks cool. I may have to try a hand in myself. But I read the whole post and didn't see anything about it having to be related to frugality, just to personal finance. Did I miss something?

I think all of the articles are good. I personally like the one about Kellen and the popcorn best (those sneaky popcorn manufacturers!)

I do think that if you were actually trying to win the contest (which you said you were not expecting to do) that #5 might be the most controversial with his general readership which might be uncomfortable with the Christian philosophy behind the 4 for Christmas, and who also might feel that only giving 4 gifts is somehow "stingy".

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that is how I feel about it, just pointing out that the regular readers of his blog will be the folks voting on the posts, and that those things might cause a gut reaction in some of them.

Funny....I was thinking #5 is the one I would choose. I guess I am just drawn to the controversy! I think buying less at Christmas dramatically effects your bottom line!

You are all sooo great! Thanks for the input, (and I'd welcome more if you haven't chined in yet! )

Jenn,
I did double check with Fire Finance after your comment Frugal entries are welcome. You should enter!

All of the posts are great, but the popcorn & the 200,000 posts are definitely my top two out of those choices.

Thanks for letting everyone know about the contest too! That looks like fun!!

I think those are great choices. You're right- #4 is a tricky category. Net worth is something people don't think of often.
