My husband....the Bargain King
Would you mind if I take a moment to brag about Tim? My husband takes a lot of teasing from my family. He is just wired differently. He is emotionally based. The artsy type personality. I am practical & efficient to the core. My parents, especially my dad, who are our only neighbors for about a mile, are also wired this way.
When we first got married, his artistic personality drove me nuts, but over the years I've come to appreciate his strengths. We've discovered that together, we are a good team. Anyway, I digress.
Tim is frugal. We've learned this together. He loves to find a bargain, and I just had to tell you about his latest find! Some days he has down time between visiting schools. Often he will browse Wal-Mart, especially the clearance aisle! Today he made a fantastic find!
We never got our garden in this year. Before here, we lived in the city with almost no yard. It has been many years since we have had a decent sized garden, and then we froze most things. We did a little canning this year; apples, sauce and jams. When canning, I boiled the jars in a large kettle. We did not have a pressure cooker.
Next year I would like to do a large garden and a lot more canning. To do more canning I really wanted a pressure cooker. We were considering adding this to our Christmas list, but today Tim found a deal. He found a 23 quart pressure cooker for $32, regular price $92. I checked on Amazon and the regular prices there were similar. I didn't see anything on sale yet. I'm so excited! I wish I had something to can.
Isn't my husband great?!
The underlying moral to this story: If you need canning supplies now is the time to buy them.

Now is also a great time to pick up Halloween costumes, even if only as play costumes for the wee ones. And your hubby sounds like a keeper. Opposites can definitely attract, like the old saying goes.

Oh he is a keeper!
Don't tell my four year old, but I am planning on buying some costumes to use for the dress up clothes she wants for Christmas! Thanks for the reminder!
Your husband sounds like me! My favorite thing is to get a good bargain and then tell everyone about it.
Can spaghetti sauce, cooked chicken, and of course pumpkin! Pumpkins are soo cheap this week... I don't celebrate Halloween, but Monday my son needed one for a school project - got a big one for a dollar. So of course, pumpkin soup! Can your chicken broth/ chicken noodle soup.
I am ashamed to say, I didn't even use my pressure cooker this year. Hopefully next year...or maybe I will try some of the suggestions. If you try anything unconvetional let me know...maybe I'll be motivated.
OH, that is quite a find! I have been looking for a boiling water canner...sort of nervous about the pressure ones. (This is only my 2nd year even using a boiling water one-that I borrow- or my big 12 qt stock pot which works for pints.)
Anyway, I've added my canner to my Christmas list. I just might check one more Walmart though...
