Apples - Tackled

The apples are finally tackled, for now! We've eaten apple crisp, dumplings, sauce and fried apples. We have dried some, canned some, canned apple butter and sauce. I even tried apple jelly. It never set so I am calling it apple syrup. Oh, and we used some of the misshapen ones to lure in the deer. (Bow season started Saturday.)

When we first started the apples I was doing the peeling with a knife. I was really trying to hold off purchasing a peeler/corer. We are planning to put several of these type things on our Christmas list, but after the first batch of apple butter, I decided this tool was something I could no longer live with out! If you look closely, you can see the bag of "deer apples."

Let's just say the right tool makes all the difference! I could really whip out the apples with this baby! The kids could even help.

So, we are done with apples for now. I say for now because there are still more on the tree. Now that I have played with different recipes and we have consumed quite a bit of the harvest, I am thinking I really should do some more sauce. The kids will eat a quart of sauce at one meal. So back to the tree we will soon go, and there will be more to tackle.

OH WOW - love apples but awww those poor deer - its a good thing I dont live in hunting country - I could never live at this time of year

I agree though an apple peeler is the way to go for that kind of a job!!! Good for you for getting it done!

Come check out ours too - we tackled something close to my daughters heart - her hamster Chubbers cage! :)

That's a lot of apples you had!! I still need to go to a farm and get me some! I also agree and apple peeler is a must! I love my apple peeler/corer/slicer from Pampered Chef!

Happy Tuesday!

My mil bought me one of those -- but I never quite got the hang if it. It seemed like if the apple was at all asymmetrical, it didn't work well. But that is probably due more to my inexperience than the device's fault.

My mil would always do things in batches, so when she made pies she made several at once. My fil would peel the apples for her using one of these. It's one of her pleasant memories now that he's gone.

Yum yum... that all sounds soooo good. But what a huge amount of work. I agree that you definitely made a smart purchase with that apple peeler.

Great work!

Aww C'mon Phelan, I didn't do nearly as many apples as you did. I'll be the one grumbling in the winter when I have to buy applesauce! :)

I call that a major tackle! I would have opted for the peeler from the beginning! Sounds yummy and well worth the work! Good job!
