Save the Date?

I don't get it. Are Save the Date cards new? Or maybe I just don't run in the right circles for something like this. I got my first one for a wedding we attended last year. Which by the way was a beautiful and very classy event.

I understand people are busy and weekends fill up fast. But why do we need save the date and then invitations? Tradition says that invitations should not be mailed any sooner than three weeks before the wedding. If that is not enough time maybe we should just mail the invitations sooner? When we got married we set the date, spread it by word of mouth and mailed out invitations. Am I old and overly frugal to think save the date cards are unnecessary?

It is amazing the array of printed invitations that you can purchase. Can anyone tell me what a
QuinceaƱera is?

Okay, first...a quinceira (or however you spell it) is a hispanic birthday celebration (I think). It is a huge "coming out" type party. I read a book about female rites of passages once and there was a big story about it. Very interesting.

As for save the date cards. Let me tell you a story. I received a save the date card last winter. It was for Memorial Week-end. I waited and waited and never received an invitation for the actually wedding. Isn't that weird? Then I received a save the date email for a first birthday party. The next thing I got was an email with pics from the party I was never actually invited to! So, if you send a save the date card to me I am just tossing it and waiting for the actual invite.

Oh, I forgot to mention. The people that sent me a save the date card for the wedding just sent me a baby shower card in the mail. Ha.

That is so funny. Maybe people don't know how to use these things either!

Thanks for the quinceira info!

And I'll add that the quinceira (SP?) is also supposed to be for their 15th bday?? I believe that is right.
A good friend sent out those save the date cards and I hadnt heard of them either. I cant tell you how many people came up to me, knowing we were friends, and said, "WHAT is this???" Then came the fiasco where half their wedding invitations didnt make it so it was very confusing. One day, when my kids marry we will just do invites. If you can make it, great; if not, we probably wont miss you anyway bc we will be celebrating! :-D

Rightfully so, logically save the date card doesn't make scenes, but hope its just a build in custom that is ruing in.
