Free Apples
In the neighbors' pasture, where Mamaw and Papaw keep the cows, horse and ponies, there are two apple trees. We have been feeding the animals the less desirable apples from these trees and eating a few ourselves for awhile now. Both of these trees are small. The one did not have many apples on, and they are gone now. The other tree is loaded.
The other day the matriarch told Papaw, if we would use them, we could have all the apples we want. You know I could not pass on that! I have no idea what kind of apples they are, but they are firm and tart. The matriarch reports them to be "good cookin' apples."
Today, we picked apples. We didn't get the haul that Phelan did, (Of course after her recent post, maybe I am glad we didn't) but I was surprised by how many apples that little tree had. We brought home 3 paper bags and one small box full. There were more, but we didn't have any more containers with us. We decided to wait a week and go back for more!
I probably will make apple sauce with most of them. I may try an apple butter recipe in my Bootstraps and Biscuits cookbook (see the side bar.) I have never made apple butter before, but we like it and this recipe is done in the crock pot. If I try it, I will let you know how it turns out.
Tonight I tried something else new; West Virginia Apple Pie. It is also from Bootstraps and Biscuits. We all loved it. Here is the recipe.
Beat 1 egg. Add 3/4 cup sugar and continue beating. Add 1 tsp vanilla. Mix 1/3 cup self-rising flour to the egg misture. Fold in 1 1/2 cups sliced raw apples and 1/2 cup nut meat of your choice. Pour into a well-oiled pie pan. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Bake in 350 degree preheated oven for 25 minutes. Serve warm.

Is this an "impossible pie"?
Aunt Nancy
Trust me, no one wants the haul I got, unless they have minions to do the work for them. The pie sounds good, and easy. Thank you!
I really am surprised I do not wiegh 400 lbs yet. My wife cooks 98% of stuff from scratch, and everything tastes great. This pie is no exception. It is crispy, and crunchy with the taste of the wild apples coming through very well, with the nutty overtones clinching the taste in your memory with every bite. It comes off a bit dry at first longingto be attached to a bowl of warm milk, or perhaps Ice cream, and btw, what doesn't go with a bowl of Ice Cream?
Did you know Tim aspires to be a food critic?! :) Over the top isn't he?!
Aunt Nancy - The only impossible pies I know are the Biscuik kind with chicken or hamburger. Are there fruit ones too?
We made apple sauce over the weekend. We gave the kids some of those pumpkin carving child safe knives and let them cut the sliced apples into littler sliced apples.
Fall really must be here.
I have made apple butter in a crock pot & it's real good. Just be sure to put it on in the morning as it takes about 11 hrs.Mabel
I wish I could find a source for free apples!! And when you find them in a situation like that you can bet they haven't been sprayed or anything, so they are actually free ORGANIC apples :)
